What made it so easy to start on this was that all I had to do was go find a cotton t-shirt in my closet that I didn't mind cutting up. Each of the 5 strands are either 1 or 2 inch widths of the shirt.
Then I sewed (stapling it works, too) the 5 ends together and taped the end to my desk so I could pull it taut as I braided.
Oh, go ahead. Take a walk to your closet and find a t-shirt. You know you want to try it! (Hints: The thinner fabrics are a little easier to braid. Fabric needs to be stretchy) Here's the link for the directions: http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2011/06/repurposing-tshirts-into-5-strand-braided-headbands.html
